2/20/09 John 4:1-15

SCRIPTURE: John 4:1-15
(Please enjoy the entire passage and share the verse(s) which speak to you) The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized but his disciples. (John 4:1-2).
OBSERVATION:

2/17/09 Matthew 6:25-34

Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34
(Please share the verse which speaks to you) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be provided for you ( Matthew 6:33)
Observation:
Searching for the kingdom of God (a life with God through Jesus Christ) is as important and beneficial today as achieving an eternal goal.

I will give my worry to the Lord.

2/14/09 2 Corintians 4:7-11

scripture: We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

observation: Jesus died for our sins. In our lives, who we are, what we are should reflect the life that Jesus led.

Prayer: Lord you know my heart. Please forgive me when I do not act in the way that best represents you. Loving and caring.

Yes: I will watch, at times when it is toughest to act Christian, and remember that people are looking for a promise in Christ through me.

2/13/09 1 Corinthians 10:23-24, 10:31-11:1

Pick the verse that speaks to you!

Scripture: Everything is permissible - but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible - but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the Glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God - even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. NIV

Observation: With all of our personal freedoms that we have, we need to consider others in the choices that we make.

Application: I can remember the lowest times in my life that came from decisions that I made for myself without considering how my decision affected those around me. The highest times in my life were the times that I did things because I wanted to help others first instead of just helping myself. I felt more blessings by putting others first.

Prayer: Lord, you have set the example of putting others before yourself by dying for our sins on the cross. For that I cannot thank you enough. Be with me in my daily walk that I may continue to put others first, so that I may be an example of your love for me.

Yes: My actions will reflect the examples of Christ.

2/12/09 Psalm 139:1-18

Pick the verse that speaks to you!

Scripture: O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in - behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me, even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb, I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God. How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

Observation: How marvelous is a creator that knows us before we were born, who surrounds us and guides us throughout our life.

Application: We have been created for great things by God. Take action and know that God is with you. Even in your darkest hour when you feel furthest from home God is with you.

Prayer: Thank you Lord. For creating and knowing me. For not leaving me in my darkest hour. For knowing my actions before I make them. Continue to be with me to guide me in the path you want me to go.

Yes: With a God that knows me so well, I will not worry about doing things on my own.

2/11/09 Matthew 5:13-16

Select the verse that speaks to you!

Scripture: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown our and trampled by men.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16 NIV

Observation: In verse 13 the term salf of the earth is used to define us. The important part of this verse, to me, is that if the salt loses its saltiness, it is no longer worth anything except to be thrown out and trampled by men. The notes in my Bible say that salt was gathered from the Dead Sea and was full of impurities that caused it to lose some of its flavor.

Application: We need to prevent impurities from seeping into our lives. Keeping the Word of God close, praying with purpose and surrounding ourselves with people who will hold us accountable will help prevent impurities.

Prayer: Lord help me to keep the impurities of life out of my life.

Yes: I will keep God close to keep the impurities far away.

2/10/09 Psalm 104:24-33

Pick the verse that speaks to you!
Scripture: How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number- living things both large and small. There the ships go to and fro and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works - he who looks at the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Observation: The Lord, God, is an awesome God! Creating every living creature and providing everything that they need when they need it. A powerful God that not only can give, but also destroy. There is so much wonder and admiration for our Lord God.

Application: Take time to look for God. Even when the sky is dark, the rain is heavy, the wind is strong, and the waves are high, know that we have an awesome God and that God is good!

Prayer: Lord, that you for providing for my needs, when I need it. Thank you for your creation around me. Thank you for loving me as your creation and blessing me with family and friends. Forgive me for not looking to you with more trust and faith. You indeed are an awesome God.

Yes: Now is the time to act. Now is the time to sing praises. Now is the time to let people know that we have a God that has not left us, but lives in us!

2/9/09 Colossians 3:12-17

Please pick out the verse that speaks to you.

Scripture: Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and clearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put in love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. - Colossians 3:12-17

Observation: As Christians we have been blessed as His chosen people. Our relationships need to reflect that we are such. In our actions and in our words. Times may get stormy and dark around us, but with the Joy and Thanksgiving that we keep in our hearts, those around will feel the warmth of our love in Jesus Christ.

Application: We need to take time to feel, show and share the love and grace given to us by Jesus Christ to the people we interact with every day.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the gift of being one of your chosen people. Help me to share the warmth that you have given me in the stormy darkness that surrounds me.

Yes: I will show the love Christ has given me in my relationships.

2/7/09 Romans 10:8-15

Scripture: Romans 10:8-15
(Please read and select the verse that speaks to you) But what does it say, “The Word is near you in your mouth and in your heart - that is, the word of faith which we are preaching” (vs8)
Observation:
In a passage that describes the way of salvation and the joy, is a reminder of how the message of God’s love and provision is already near (written upon our hearts). This is a quote from Deuteronomy 30:14.
Application:
I can trust the Lord has already placed deep within me a hunger for salvation. I am created in the image of divine love and because of the created nature God’s love is imprinted upon my sole.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for being near, nearer than my next breath. Forgive me when I have not fully lived your love.
Yield:
Fear I an incapable of service to and for the Lord.

2/6/09 Philippians 4:10-13

Scripture:
(Please select the verse that speaks to you) I can do everything through Him who give me strength (vs 13),
Observation
The inner strength we need in life comes from the Lord.
Application:
The previous verse (vs 12) states trials and troubles of life can exhaust a person’s strength. Often in tough times it seems easier to rely on self. This is dangerous as it can be self-defeating and self-exhausting. I must remember to rely on the Lord.
Prayer:
Lord thank you for being my rock and my fortress. Teach me to remember you are my source of strength at all times.
Yield:
I must yield over reliance in self.

John 6:25-34

Scripture: John 6:25-34
(please pick a different verse in the passage) “Jesus replied, “This is the work of God; that you believe in the One He has sent (vs29).
Observation:
Belief is vital to a life of faith.
Application:
Like the disciples in the passage sometimes I think I need a “sign” to believe. It is interesting though how Jesus uses a sign (Moses and bread) to help the disciples’ “belief”. But what Jesus was doing with the story of Moses and bread was explaining how ancient Israelites felt they needed a sign of God provision and love. I too think sometimes I need that “sign” and forget there are signs already around me.
Prayer:
Lord, help my unbelief. Teach me to remember you and how you have always provided for me and shown me love.
Yield:
I must yield this need for outward signs of God’s provision and love.

2/4/09

Scripture: Matthew 25:31-46
When did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? (vs 38)
Observation:
Jesus is teaching that actions matter and we are to serve the least among us.
Application:
In one of the most powerful Gospel passages, Jesus calls us to serve the people at the margins of society. Sometimes it is very easy to spot people at the margins. They are the hungry holding a cardboard sign, the family living in a shelter, or the sick. But sometimes people we know live at the margins of society. The person next door may feel isolated and unloved. The co-worker may be struggling with questions of faith. The margins of society are blurry. They are not just marked by power and wealth. Some live at the margins simply because someone else has over looked them.
Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes to those who live at the margins of society and use me as a vessel; pouring out your love.
Yield:
Being single focused on how I see and serve those at the margins.

2/3/09

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (vs.4).
Observation:
Even 2000 years ago, people were tempted by forces and things like money, power, and ease. These could be gods over them.
Application:
Even today forces and things can be gods, holding power over our lives. As moderns, we must always strive to seek the light of Christ which points to God and away from the gods of this world.
Prayer:
Lord forgive me when I have chose gods of this age over you. Shine Your light into my eyes so that I only see you.
Yield:
I must yield the believe I can choose my gods.

Monday, February 2, 2009

2/2/09

Scripture: Psalm 91
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty (Vs.1).
Observation:
There is security in living in the Lord's presence.
Application:

We can chose to live in the presence of God or we can chose to not live in the presence of God. Sometimes we chose to be visitors to the presence of God. When just a visitor (not a dweller) to the presence of God, one finds it difficult to find rest in God's shadow during difficult times.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for hearing me when I call and allowing me to live in the shelter of your amazing love.
Yield:
I must yield my "frequent flyer miles" (my excuses) for being just a visitor to God's presence.
